Notes:

A family in Germany have received a box of Christmas gifts from China in this coloured engraving from 1901. The mother is wearing (i think) a traditional embroidered xiuhe dress or shirt/blouse or jacket; a boy clutches maybe a vase; a girl with long red hair cradles a doll; the father, in a suit, holds a tiny figure up close to his eye. Behind is a Christmas tree decorated with burning candles and with ornaments. Taking centre stage is a strange seated Buddah-like statue with tongue sticking out and long fingernails, possibly inspired by the Meissen nodding-Buddha statuettes that were popular in Germany at the time. The two children gaze at it with rapt attention.

The piece is signed by Edward Cucuel, who was born in the United States but lived and worked most of his life in Germany.
