Notes:

A front door, with open wooden shutters, one having a bag hanging perhaps for mail. Windows on either side with open shutters and bars over the glass; a green bench by the door; an oval frieze containing a of the artist; a basket, perhap with grapes and a streaming festoon, or perhaps the festoon is decorative. A ladder in front of the door goes up almost to the second story. A large tree in the foreground, and a short poem at lower right.

This picture is of the house of the artist Ludwig Richter in the town of Loschwitz in Saxony, Germany, and was made by Richard Müller.

Adrian Ludwig Richter (1803 – 1884) was a German painter and etcher.

The poem written at lower right says:

Lud. Richter-Haus

Gross Denken, im Herzen rein,

Halte Dich gering und klein;

Freue Dich om Gptt allein!

That might be translated into English like this:

Ludwig Richter’s House

Think big, be pure in heart,

Keep yourself humble and small;

Rejoice in God alone!
