A small pair of buildings next to each other in the foreground have two flagpoles raised in front of them, although the flags themselves are drawn plain white in this engraving.
One of these buildings has a dome on its roof.
Beyond these we have a small octagonal building with a domed roof. Behid that we glimpse a much larger building through trees, but it is almost entirely hidden.
There are some fifteen or twenty people scattered about the area, including, in the foreground a drummer seated cross-legged facing us.
The text is Christian; it refers to other religions as baseless superstitions, with the ill-informed certainty so common in that religion. The temple belongs to the Nath monastic order.
By the kindness of a friend, lately returned from India, (say the Editors of the Missionary Register,) we have been enabled to give, from a drawing made on the spot, an engraving of a celebrated Hindoo [Hindu] temple at Goruckinath, about two miles from Goruckhpore. This temple is situated in the midst of a beautiful and extensive forest of mango-trees; and is a place of much celebrity among the Hindoos, who resort to it, not only from the surrounding districts, but eve from the remote provinces of India. The tree on the left is the celebrated banian [banyan] tree, with its fibres shooting toward the ground.
