The pyramids were accounted by the ancients one of the seven wonders of the world. They are alike famous for their vast size and remote antiquity. History furnishes no authentic information respecting the time ot the object of their erection. They continue to be objects of admiration, as specimens ofancient art and power.
Near one of the pyramids, is the celebrated sphinx, a statue of a huge monster, cut in the solid rock, having the face of a virgin, and the body of a lion. The largest pyramid is that of Cheops, not far from Ciaro. It is 499 feet high, and has a square base of 693 feet. (p. 173)
