Initial Letter W With Demon and Woman and Crescent Moon more
initials, letterw, drop caps, demons, supernatural creatures, moon, nudity, bare feet, men, women, people, kidnapping, devils
A decorative initial, vignetted, inhabited: a drop cap.
A large thin spidery letter W at the upper right of a picture of a naked man with wings and with horns on his head, a demon, perhaps, dragging a woman, barefoot but in a dress, seeming to rest on the crescent moon.
The illustration is reproduced mechanically, with varying sizes of dots, an early use of the dot screen. The largest sizes will print well in black and white, but test carefully for possible moiré patterns.
This initial letter introduced an article about a new (1890) edition of the Book of Songs (Buch der Lieder) by Heinrich Heine, with two hundred illusrtations by Friedrich Stahl.
Our initial belongs to [the poem “Was bewegt und tobt mein tolles Blut?” (What drives and rages my mad blood?), rich in romantic love.)]; it depicts the “dark son of the night” who leads the poet to his beloved’s wedding feast.
Abducted: Close behind the honorable throne of the breast, there I stood, gave no quarter. Music rushes, I stood still, the joyful noise saddened me. The bride, she looks so blissfully happy, the bridegroom squeezes her hands, the best man wants the cup and drinks from it and so finely hands it to the groom; she smiles, thanks—oh woe, my red blood all drunk
