A young woman is sitting inside a window with a striped awning, seen from the street; she is holding a book and trying to read. In the street, a man weighed down by a sack on his back, a tray in front of him hung with necklaces and other trinkets. He has a hat, a heavy fur coat, and sports a goatee.

Next to the window are four handles fastened to strings or wires leading upwards: bells for apartments.
