Kepler is portrayed in this detailed black and white engraving as a man with black hair brushed back, a receding hairline, and a black beard perhaps starting to grey. He wears a collar with lace edges.

Johannes Kepler, or John Kepler in English, was a German mathematician and astronomer who is probably best known today for discovering how plants move:

In ellipses, not circles; moving faster nearer to the sun; a link between distance from the sun and time to complete an orbit.

In working out this, Kepler proved that planets orbit the sun, not the other way, affirming the work of Copernicus. He helped the work of Sir Isaac Newton, the inventor of gravity.

A caption under ths portrait says Kepler (in ornate copperplate hand) and, under that, Stabilº artº del Lloyd austrº Triest.(where º is drawn as a supersscript o with a dot udner it) suggesting that Oesterreichische Lloyd drew the picture in Trieste. The engraver also signed it, as N Dietz.
