The woodcut appeared in the Supplement, March 19, 1870 to the Illustrated London News. An accompaanying story noted that Mr. Charles Dickens had been giving public readings, but would no longer do so. He is depiected here as a bearded man standing at a desk, with one hand holding a book and the other outstretched in a rhetorical gesture.
