70.—Border of cherubs climbing in trees more
full-page borders, borders, cherubs, putti, nudity, bare feet, boys, vines, inhabited borders, foliated borders, monkeys, early printing
A bold arched frame for text, with an empty shield beneath it supported by two putti or cherubs; other cherubs climb the lifeless trees which are laden with grapevines. A cherub at upper left defends himself with a small round sheld from the cherub at upper right about to fire an arrow at him with his bow.
There’s also a monley and at least one bird in the right-hand tree.
This full-page border is taken from the title page of a book printed in 1515 by Johann Knobloch; the woodcut was made by the German artist Hans Wechtlin.
