Among the outstanding features of British Railway operation of to-day is the development of the long distance non-stop run. This has been made possible by water-troughs, enabling an engine to replenish its water tank whilst travelling at full speed. [...] During the summer season, the “Royal Scot” train leaving Euston at 10 a.m. dailty, Sundays excepted, conveys only passengers for destinations in Scotland. [...] The 401.4 miles between Euston and Glasgow are covered in 7hrs. 40 mins., or at the rate of 52.4 miles per hour. My copy of the book has the 6135 crssed out, ad 45738 written in its place; I suspect the latter is the British Rail number, however. |
