Au Lavoir
Gravure de Smeeton et Tilly, d’après le tableau de Fernand Pelez.
At laundry. Engraving by Smeeton and Tilly, after the tableau by Fernand Pelez.
Two women are working on laundry. One (on our right) is scrubbing cloth with a bar of soap on a table; the other is wringing out cloth at a tub of water, staring with a half-smile as if to say, “why don’t you stop painting and help us?”
Fernand Pelez was a Spanish painter living in Paris and known for painting beggars and the homeless, circus performers, and the poor.
