Notes:

“Drawn by E. Ronjat, from a photograph.”

There may be some confusion here, as the emperor of Annam (Vietnam today) had the rôle of Great Priest at festivals. At any rate the pear-shaped ball at the top of his staff is truncated in other copies of this book too.

The man stands tall, with a pointy headdress turning into a long scarf behind his shoulders, and with a design on it that might be an eye. He has moustache and goatee. He wears an ankle-length robe, and holds his right hand against his chest, carrying a small statue of the Buddha, a ring of beads loose around his wrist. In his left hand he holds a staff slightly taller than he is, surmounted by a construction of wire and rings. Under his robes he seems to be wearing long trousers.
