The title given to this painting, Moselblümchen, can refer to a swet blend of wine from the Mosel region in Germany, or it can refer to a traditional folk dress worn at wine festivals in the same region. It could also refer to flowers found in the Mosel Valley.
We see a girl, perhaps an older teen, with her hair crowned with a wreath of flowers, wearing a rouch fringed shawl and a blouse whose sleeves are tied at the cuffs with string, holding up a wine goblet. Her sideways glance and her slightly parted smiling lips might suggest more than a glass of wine to some viewers.
The painting is signed at the top Joseph Lieck 1886, even though Lieck’s name is usually written as Josepf, and at the bottom left, T. Hönemann, and at bottom right R. Bong, X.A., meaning engraver. It is credited as follows:
Photographieverlag von Löscher & Petsch, Hofphotographen, Berlin; Jos. Lieck; Verlag von Rich. Bong in Berlin W. 57.
I did not find any useful information about T. Hönemann, except for an auction price of C$570 and birth and death in the 19th and 20th century respectively, and links to Germany.
