Notes:

King Ixion took advantage of Zeus’ mercy by trying to seduce Hera, who was that god’s wife. The king was punished by being bound to a wheel that would spin and burn forever in the underworld.

Here we see a naked man stretched out and bound at wrist and ankle to a cartwheel thats on fire. The bonds seem to be snakes, and there is smoke all around.

In the poem Lucile, Lord Alfred Valgrave, Lucile’s former lover, wants to continue their romance even though he is now married, and Lucile reminds him that this must remain no more than a dream:

“The wheel of Ixion, alas! and the cries

Of the lost and tormented. Departed, for us,

Are the days when with innocence we could discuss

Dreams like these.
