Notes:

The woman representing Justice here is blindfolded (as usual in art) representing impartiality. She rides a lion to symbolise power and authority.

Her name, Justitia, appears at the top of the picture. We see her bare feet on either side of the lion, showing that she is riding its back.

The artist is credited as Fidus; see the link for more information.

The following text accompanied the picture when it was published in Jugend magazine:

[first, an automatic English translation]

The artist is to be compared to the disciple,

who once saw dream visions on Patmos:

A riddle-like image full of enigmatic signs

stands before us, the longing of his soul

And lets us, gazing, reach that land,

where the heart was always given its due.

Countless figures wander there;

Nature is free, and divinely it may reign.

And in the original German in the magazine:

Der künstler ist dem Jünger ze vergleichen,

Der einst auf Patmos Traumgesichte sah:

Ein Räthselbild voll roundersamer Zeichen

Steht seiner Seele Sehnsucht vor uns da

Und läszt uns schauend jenes Land erreichen,

Wo immerdar dem Herzen Recht geschah.

Rackt roandeln dort unzählige Gestalten;

Natur ist frei, und göttlich darf sie roalten.

It is attributes to the German patriotic poet Albert Matthäi.
