Notes:

A child, a girl in a long billowy dress perhaps, kneels in a graveyard in the winter snow, perhaps in moonlight. She holds a shovel, covering a grave perhaps. She is grieving.

The engraving is signed Dalziel, and also, in the bottom right corner, has the monogram “AFS” for Alfred Frederick Sandys.

‘My father and my mother

And my sisters four—

Their beds are made in swelling turf,

Fronting the westen door.’

‘Child, if thou speak to them,

They will not answer thee;

They are deep down in the earth—

Thy face they cannot see.’

“The Little Mourner.”—Dean Alford.

From “English Sacred Poetry.” by Frederick Sandys. (p. 173)
