Notes:

In this chromolithograph, a young man with a belt holding up his red breech-cloth or shorts, sandals, and the helmet of a warrior from Roman times, stands shirtless with his bare right arm extended over a hot and flaming brazier. Another soldier behind him tried to pull him away, but he is determined.

In the far background flames and smoke from the city walls of Rome.

In the foreground a shield on the ground, and under it, a blood-stained sword.

This is Gaius Mucius Scaevola, a brave Roman youth. His last name means left-handed, because he injured his right, as the following extract from the book says:

[Automatic translation]

Aemilius’s heroism bordered on ferocity in Junius Brutus, who, as we know, not only condemned his two sons to death for their secret dealings with Tarquinius Superbus, who was trying to reclaim his lost crown, but also wished to witness their execution himself.

No less ferocious was Gaius Mucius Scaevola, who condemned himself to have his hand burned for having missed the blow with which he attempted to kill King Porsena.

(p. 596)
