The picture shows a young man lying on the floor of a prison cell or castle dungeon [donjon], his hands on his head, and with one ankle chained to the wall. There are a great number of rats or mice in the chamber.

I take the location depicted from the following lines:

He had nae been i’ the court of France
    A twelvemoth nor sae long,
Till he fell in love with the king’s daughter,

This image gave me nightmares when i was a child. it filled me with fascination & horror then, as now.
