Notes:

Die alte Tolbooth in Canongate

The old tollbooth is actually rather large and ornate, and dates from 1591. It is the building on the right-hand side of the street, with the clock and the turrets, or bartizans.

Wikipedia says it was built in the Scottish medieval style, but, spelling of mediæval aside, this really just means it was built in Scotland towards the end of the mediæval period, in the local style.

The building was not a tolbooth in any modern sense. It was a prison and council chamber and courthouse. It was remodeled in 1875, six years after this book was published. Judging by the three dormer windows in the engraving, and their style, this drawing is from before the remodeling.
