A man with a moustache is wearing a flat cap, a billowing jacket and button-up waistcoat, and has his hands on a horizontal wheel at the stern of a ship. There are various objects on the deck near him, including a tall mug and a round basket. He seems to be concentrating, or perhaps remembering a sad occasion, and perhaps has the dog end of a cigarette on his lower lip.

The picture is signed with an A, or perhaps AL, at lower left, and X.U.P. [illegible] at lower right.
