Notes:

A man stands facing left, apparently calm, wearing overcoat and wide-brimmed hat, in an underground tunnel; behind him is a large metal cylindrical tank, horizontal, fitted with railway wheels; to the man’s right are two large wheels, the upper with a handle and the lower toothed; the main is operating the upper wheel. In front of the man is a machine of straight nea-rhorizontal pipes, also on railway wheels. The railway track extends almost to the end of the tunnel, in front of the machine. The explanation given (in French) in the text suggests that the tunnel-digging machine is powered by compressed air from the large metal tank.
