An eagle with outstretched wings supports a board or sign reading “THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO SAINT JOHN” and also holds in its talons a black snake.
The eagle represents Saint John the Evangelist in Christion symbology. The eagle soars high up towards heaven. Jesus, of course, is the Second Adam, so the snake reminds us in Jesus, Mankind is given a second chance to refuse the snake of temptation. or something like that.
