Letter A With Angel: The Transfiguration more
lettera, letters, initials, inhabited initials, decorated initials, men, people, jesus, bare feet
This capital lette “A” was designed and carved by Eric Gill especially for the start of Matthew Chapter 17.
The first four lines were printed next to the A. The letter A belongs to the first word, AND, which was printed up close to the letter, with the tops of the N and D level with the top of the A (and the rest of the text carryong on along the same baseline as the N and D), but the next three lines indented, with the last of them, the fourth line from teh top including the one with ND, sharing a badeline with the foot of the large “A” itself.
So the A was a four-line capital, with the AND making a bridge.
The feather, or plume, is in the left margin.
The picture here is of Jesus with his face lit up, transfigured.
