Notes:

In the book this engraving is captioned Caprichos de Cupido, but the original oil painting was in an auction catalogue entitled Venus and Cupid.

Here, Cupid, shown as a naked curly-haird boy with wings, is smiling or giggling as Venus pulls him closer and puts her arm round him (cold hand on his side!) and perhaps is about to kiss him on the cheek or forehed. She is topless, kneeling, barefoot. They are outdoors with a tree in the background and perhaps a stream.

The artist, Perrault, is perhaps the quintessential Valentine’s Day Card artist!

This engraving was tipped in as a double-page spread in the book; it’s rather large.
