Notes:

The picture shows a gentleman and two ladies in probably eighteenth century dress, in the grounds of some large house or castle; they have met along a broad path leading to stone steps, and in the background are stone balustrades and a fountain. But the predominant feature of the picture, without question, is the cover of huge mature trees, the light shining through their branches and between their leaves to create a wholly light impression.

A GARDEN

“Give me, O indulgent Fate,

Give me yet before I die,

A sweet, but absolute, retreat,

’Mongst paths so lost, and trees so high,

That the world may ne’er invade,

Through such windings and such shade

My unshaken liberty.”       Countess of Winchelsea.

Drawn by F. W. Hulme.

Engraved by John Dalziel.
