This is probably the remains of a gate in the City Walls of Lincoln, but I’m not sure: the book doesn’t say, and in any case isn’t very reliable. If so, the lower walls may well be Roman, posibly dating to the first century AD. It might, however, be part of Lincoln Castle. The tower in the background is presumably Lincoln Cathedral, and does look like it. Lincolnshire’s Roman Roads (BBC article). |
