Notes:

Simon de Montfort was a member of the French nobiliy. He came to England in the year 1230. de Montford did super well: he became the Earl of Leicester, married the sister of King Henry III., and then ended up fighting the King in 1263.

After defeating the King he made a parliament with representation and a constitution, but was later defeated and killed by the barons and Prince Edward.

Here we see Simon de Montfort as a knight holding upright a spear with a banner to identify him, and wearing a mixture of plate and chain mail i think, with a triangular shield bearing a lion rampant (that is, a lion rearing up on hind legs).

A very classic picture of a medieval knight.
