A naked man lies dead in the background, his genitals conveniently hidden by a cloth. In the foreground, a man wearing only an animal-skin scurries barefoot away through the rocks. The biblical scene is well-known. The image has a caption: “Cain and Abel By Lord Leighton, P.R.A., from “Dalziel’s Bible Gallery.” By permission of Messrs. Herbert Virtue & Co. Ltd.” (p. 239) “Special mention may be made of those [pictures for the Dalziel’s Bible Gallery book] by Lord, then Sir Frederick, Leighton, Bart., P.R.A., whose drawing of “Cain and Abel will always rank as one of the grandest examples of Biblical art of modern times” (p. 237) |
