Somehow i ended up with this manuscript, which authorized the founding of a Church school for the poor in Haynes, Bedfordshire, UK, in 1850. Probably this was the school that’s in the South-West corner of Haynes Church End, almost at Clophill Lane, converted to a private house in the 1960s by an architect who lived there (Chris Robinson). My father Eric Quin was the Vicar of Haynes, so we lived in the Vicarage; he also found the deeds for the house showing it was restored in the 1570s, when it was infested with rats, and that the “advowson” of the house (the right to choose the vicar who lived in it) was transferred in the year 1236. No wonder it felt old. The school dated from 1850, though, and was across the road, and had been turned into a private house. There was a smaller schoolroom next to the vicarage with a builder’s mark in the brickwork dating it to 1776.
