Notes:

The Hippocampus has the upper body and head of a horse combined with the tail of a fish. They come from Phœnecian mythology and were known in the ancient world by peopls as far apart as the Romans, the Greeks, the Picts of Scotland, and the Etruscans. Until recently they were thought to be extinct.

This woodcut or engraving was used at the top of the first page of a new chapter; this helps reders find the start of the chapter quickly by flipping through the book.
