A woman, baring her breasts, is dancing in a harem, one arm over her heard, her feet bare. In the background a musician plays a lyre; another woman serves Moroccan-style tea on an octagonal side-table. Three other woman, standing bowed, are clapping their hands, perhaps in time to the music.

Gyula Tornai was a Hungarian painter who specialised in Eastern scenes such as this.

Tornai’s interesting painting leads [us] into an Arabian “harem court” and illustrates in an artistic way how the inmates of this institution dispel the unnecessary time. As is well known, one becomes tired of resting and then longs for something to do. The noble ladies have chosen a dance, but [one that is] not too lively; They walk with clapping hands and torso bends around a dark-skinned beauty, who in gentle movements [danced] to the beat of the string sounds.
