Notes:

This is a portrait or one interesting and important artist made by another interesting and important artist!

We see the face and head of Ludwig Knaus (1829 – 1910), the German naturalist artist and genre painter, in half profile. He has bushy eyebrows, a full but drooping moustache, a greying beard, and is dressed formally.

The portrait, however, is placed in a border that features a young minstrel with his stringed instrument strapped to his back, in medieval-style clothing with hose (socks like tights that cover the feet instead of shoes and go up to the waist) and a short tunic, carrying an open book and holding a quill pen. The minstrel has no inkwell that i can see, however, and he is walking through what appears to be giant thistles, perhaps symbolizing the difficulties that the portrait subject, Ludwig Knaus, faced in his life.

This portrait is quirky and off-beat, the rectangles are not quite straight, and the young man and the older are staring at one another. It’s all very strange.

There is a separate image that i made with just the minstrel.
