La Vie Parisienne (page 1/2)

details...

Images from La Vie Parisienne (Paris Life), edited by Marcelin. This was a weekly society paper. I have 1863, 1864 and 1865 all bound together. Later the magazine became known for saucy pictures of women. It continued publication from 1863 up to 1970.

The cover of each issue says La Vie Parisienne edited by Marcelin: Elegant Manners Current Events - Fantasies - Travel Theater - Music Fashion

One issue every Saturday.

Subscriptions begin on the 1st of each month.

Offices: 9 Place de la Bourse.

Single issue sales: Defaux, 8 rue du Croissant.

Today the site seems to be occupied by Avence France-Presse, who have been there since 1835 it seems, when it was called Havas.

He blew out his lantern

A man with a large nose and a top hat and a wand is blowing at the flame in a lantern that he holds in one hand. [$]

Border with cherubs, arrow piercing hearts, flowers and leaves

This top-piece is a sketch-like drawing from a double-page spread in an article about an English couple visiting France. We see two winged cherubs standing facing one another either side of a pediment on which rests an arrow pierving two hearts. The boys have loin-cloths. One is carrying perhaps a stick, the other holding a bow. The festoons that curve [...] [more...] [$]

[picture: The Spirits]

The Spirits

We see a heading, Les Spirites (the spirists), drawn as if from the back of a stage or platform in a dimly-lit room or theatre. There’s a large audience, but on stage maybe half a dozen people kneeling on either side of a table with a drawer, facing the table, on which are dancing three giant beetles with antlers, one [...] [more...] [$]
