This late Victorian illustration shows eleven different designs of bicycle along with cross-sections of three kinds of tyre.

1820: The hobby horse;

Macmillan’s crank bicycle;

1867: First bicycle illustrated in England;

1879: The Dicycle (“Otto Safey”);

1870 The Boneshaker;

1878: Lawson’s Patent Safety;

1887: A Humber Safety;

1877: First modern level tricycle;

1883: The “Ordinary” 54 in wheel and rider’s costume;

1905: [“modern’ bicycle];

1905: The motor bicycle.

The three bicycle tyre cross-sections are marked, from smallest to largest, solid, cushion (which is essentially just a thick-walled tube) and air tube.
