Notes:

Menukarte (Hofnarr)

Court Jester, one of a series of four designs marked as modern in this 1882 book of emblems and symbols.

The court jester here (Hofnarr in German) is laughing merrily, wearing a hat with tassles and horns and balls, carrying a plate of food including what at the time would have been a very expensive pineapple, while a lion pars at his knees.

Presumably the ideas was that text would be inserted into the banners and banderols in these pictures.

The image is signed O. Leitz and Weisenbach. Weisenbach is a town in Germany. O. Leitz will be Otto Leitz, a German artist in oils who flourished from 1860 to 1910 or so.
