Decorated Initial Letter T with Cherubs and Mask more
A cherub or putti holds up a bearded man’s facemask to scare the three other cherubs in this decorative initial letter “T” used as a drop cap. The capital T has floral decorations as well as wild roses growing up it, pining for Valentine’s Day perhaps!
The illustration is after a drawing by Thmas Stothard in the 1810 edition of “The Pleasures of Memory,” a book of poetry by Samuel Rogers. In that drawing, the rod on the ground is an ivy-covered wand; here it has a rose.
