A young lady languishes on a couch, one hand supporting her head, the other holding on her lap an open book She wears a dark full-length dress and black boots and sits on a couch with an oversized arm, with a pot of tea nearby on an octagonal occasional table imported from India or Morocco.
The original oil painting was 20 × 13¼ inches, and has the head at a slightly different angle, the woman looking up. I think I prefer the engraving here.
Mr. George Clausen adopts this year the prevailing fashion of painting studio-arrangements of decorative drapery: “The Novel” contains a combination of orange-colour and pale green, and is very closely lighted.
