Chilren on the beach, with full-page border more
poems, full-page borders, borders, marine life, seaside, children, people, waves, water, beaches, leisure
This full-page layout included a circular vignetted scene of a beach, waves coming in, children playing. The children are wearing Victorian costume, including shoes and socks which i am sure must have seemed silly at the sea-side!
A border all round the page features seaweed, shells, lobsters, crabs, whelks, starfish, and more.
The lower part of the page, here blank, contained a poem, in the German Fraktur script.
Children on the Beach.
Do you hear the children’s loud joy?
Do you see them from the high-piled sand,
Building there a proud structure,
Such as no builder has ever conceived?
Though storm and wave destroy it,
As soon as they icily build it—
It will always be rebuilt anew,
With bright joy and jubilation.
And you, a man, who will despair,
Because the fall of your work grieves you?
Begin anew with fresh courage,
so that children’s joy may never be your downfall!
[By] Helene F.
The original German is as follows:
Kinder am Strande.
Hörst du der Kinder laute freude
Siehst sie aus hochgetürmtem Sand
Errichten dort ein stolz’ Gebäude,
Wie noch kein Bauherr es erfand?
Ob Sturm und Welle es vernichtet,
Sobald sie eisreg es erbaut —
Von neuem wird es stets errichtet
Mit heller Lust und Jubellant. —
Und du, ein Mann, de willst verzagen,
Weil deines Werkes Sturz dich grämt?
Beginn aufs neu’ mit frischem Wagen,
Daß Kinderlust dich night bescht!
