Chaldean Slaves, in Chaldea more
slaves, slavery, whips, people, women, men, bare feet, grindstones, mills, slave labour, shackles
Two women are working together to tun a grind-stone to make flour or meal; there’s a pile of it on a cloth on the right-hand edge of the picture. The slaves have bear arms and feet but are otherwise clothed. Another woman approaches, an anklet or shackle around her right leg, carrying a sack presumably of grain for the kneeling slaves to grind. An overseer stands behind them holding a whip.
The text in the book at this point is actually talking about harems and female slavery in ancient Assyria, and since it seems to me very sexist and not relevant to the picture, i have not incluided it.
