This illustration appears in the entry for February 14t, St. Valentine’s Day. “remember, my dear girl, that as smiles on the face sometimes conceal cruel dispositions, so there are some who write Valentines, and trifle with hearts for the mere pleasure of inflicting pain.” (p. 216) The picture shows a bear, or worlf, eating a dripping heart—a symbol of malice and petty hate if ever there was one! |
