53.6.—Cross with Circle details

Perhaps the circle represents the world, the inner signs the four nails used to crucify the naked Jesus, the outer branches of the cross with the fleurons representing the religion itself. This would make it a variation of the symbol for evangelists, perhaps meaning a desire to crucify everyone. But I am guessing.

The outside cross, according to the Dictionary of Symbols, is an ‘anchored cross’ which may be a reminder that the early Christians sometimes used an anchor as their symbol, to avoid being recognised and persecuted by the Romans.
