A German painter, Bernhard Fiedler was born in Berlinand studied under Johann Karl Gerst and Wilhelm Krause at the Academy of Art (Kinstakademie) there. He made sketches when he traveled and, on his return to his home in Trieste, painted in oils.

King Frederick William IV of Prussia arranged for Fiedler to spend a year in Palestine and Egyt; later, in 1885, King Leopold II of Belgium took Fiedler with him on a journey through Egypt, Palestine, Syria, Greece and Italy.
