peoppe, mermaids, women, nudity, birds, water, sitting, black and white, illustrations for children
A mermaid, a young naked woman, sits on a rock and combs her long hair, her fish’s tail dangling in the water. Gulls circle by her head. A black and white drawing in a surprisingly modern art deco style.
He came to the long row of fishing-boats drawn up on the shore, and, rounding the last boat, he saw at a little distance a young girl sitting upon a rock.
[...]
So he approached her and stole quietly near, while she went on combing her hair, with her back turned to him. It fell over her shoulders and down on the rock like the colored water of a fountain.
At the foot of the rock was her mirror, the smooth water of the tide pool, and as he came closer his shadow fell across this pool and darkened the surface.
She turned and saw him. She screamed and slipped from the rock into the the shallow water.
[...] he had no thoguht as yet that she was a mermaid.
[,...]
She made him sit beside her, and now, for the first time, he caught sight of her gleaming finny tail peeping from the seaweed and the cloud of her hair.
