Constànce stands in the parlour in front of an unlit fire. She wears a long dress, a bonnet, lace cuffs at her wrists, and the letter from her cousin hangs in her limp arms as she lowers her head. it is over: they cannot be together, she and her lover, and cannot marry. She is to be sent to a convent to be a nun.
Willard Poinsette Snyder seems to be the artist here, an American genre artist and engraver; the title page says that A. V. S. Anthony supervised the art, and may also have done the engraving.
