Imitation of Christ (page 3/3)

details...

Pictures from Imitation de Jesus-Christ (The Imitation of Christ) translated by, and with additional reflections by, Mr. G. Darboy, Paris; I have the sixth edition, dated (at the end of the preface) 1855.

The book includes fine engravings by Johann Friedrich Overbeck (1789 – 1869), engraved by Joseph Keller (1811 – 1873) in Dusseldorf, and ornate religious-themed borders around every page made by Adolphe Rouarge (1810 – 187?). There are eight different borders, repeated through the book.

The artists, author (!) and translator all died more than 70 years ago and the copyright has expired.

I bought this book at a thrift store in Port Colborne, Ontario, in September 2015.

Angel with thurible from full-page border

This angel is on one knee, his flowing hair bound with a circlet, his wings behind him. He holds one end of a chain in his left hand and the other in his right; from the right end of the chain dangles a thurible, or censer. These are used in Orthodox, oman Catholic and high Anglican churches to burn incense, with the smoke supposed to represent prayers [...] [more...] [$]

owl from full-page border

This line-drawing of an owl looks startlingly modern, with eyes wide as if in surprise, body twisted, wings spread for takeoff. It was in the bottom-left corner of a full-page border from Darboy’s 1855 edition of the Imitation of Christ. [more...] [$]

Jesus with raised hand: holy admonition

A holy Christian figure, as indicated by the halo, probably Jesus, with one finger raised, and badly-drawn feet. He looks very Western, and clean-shaven. [more...] [$]
