Ornate chapter headpiece with vignette of curled-up boy more
chapterheads, sadness, grief, boys, people, headpieces, ornaments, bare feet
This chapterhead, or headpiece, is an ornament from the top of the first page of a section of the book. It features diamond knotwork branching into grape vines with rococo stylized leaves, but the prominent feature is the central circle containing a boy, his head resting on one knee, his chest, legs and feet bare; he wears just a pair of shorts or a cloth. Smaller oval pictures to either side of him depict perhaps a purse on the left with other objects and maybe skulls on the right. The boy seems to be a study in dejection.
