This frame, cartouche, border, whatever you like to call it, features a Greek-style portico or entrance, with a laurel-crowned goddess sitting on the steps reading a book. A pile of large books is next to her, and behind her on a pillar burns sacred incense.

This border was used in a printing company’s sampler to illustrate an unusual way to make a book cover or title page, and also to try and sell the border.
