Jesus and Moses more
jesus, moses, biblical characters, patriarchs, religion, christianity, people, men, beards, bare feet
Jesus, barefoot, with divided beard and long curly hair, wearing a long dress from which his toes protrude, holds up the start of the New Testament with the Gospel of Mark; crouching next to him is Moses, old, with a long white beard, pointing to a stone tablet he holds with numbers from one to ten in Roman numerals.
This illustration is from the half-title page of the Holman Family Bible.
Note that Mark’s Gospel did not reach its present form until at least some time after the year 70, because it describes the fall of Jerusalem and the destruction of the temple.
A stone tablet the size Moses holds would be too heavy to handle like that. But that’s OK as Moses would not have used ROman numerals!
In the background we see a walled city, probably meant to be Jerusalem, and, nearer, a square palisade.
