Notes:

This is a doorway at Batalha Monastery in Potugal, or rather, a portal, as there do not seem to be physical doors that close. It is made of intricately carved stone, with a five-part main arch in which each part is a segment of a circle and is toothed with smaller circles, and the whole then duplicated at slightly smaller sdcale just behind, and and another larger toothed arch, this time in six piees, in front. Either side has niches for statues, or possibly contains invisible angels.

The architecture of Portugal has been very little investigated. The great church at Batalha* is probably the most important in the country. This building, though interesting in plan, is more remarkable for a lavish amount of florid ornament, of which our illustration (Fig. 60) may furnish some idea, than for really fine architecture. (0. 142)

The book is a little dismissive of Portugese architecture, and of the people, saying their architecture has not been studed when of course Portugese people had probably studied it extensively!
