John Tenniel (1820 – 1914).

Sir John Tenniel was an English artist known for his illustrations and cartoons, above all for the Alice books. The son of a fencing and dance master, he studied at the Royal Academy of Arts in London.

Lewis Carroll noticed his work in Punch magazine and employed him for the Alice books; the engraving was done by the Dalziel brothers.

Tenniel was knighted in 1893.
